I am likely not the only American having a mind snap at the notion of liberals tossing Molotov cocktails at electric cars.
Elon Musk was, until only recently, the Democrats’ climate hero with his pioneering Tesla vehicles, but he is now their Public Enemy Number 2 (guess who is Number 1) because he is putting his genius to work to help wring the fraud and waste out of the federal government budget so that we can hopefully avoid national insolvency. However, this still does not fully explain why supposedly intelligent Democrats and their allies on the Left have embraced domestic terrorism as a political tactic for the first time since the summer of 2020, when they were cheering on other arsonists. If one is looking for logic, their reasoning will be a bit difficult to follow, but a little patience with trying to follow the twists and turns of irrationality might yield some clues regarding this latest manifestation of the political violence and associated drama that is now becoming a fixture of our national discourse.
The anger of Democrats who are convinced that the second coming of the Third Reich is at hand because illegal immigrants are being deported, government bureaucracy is being eliminated, and a peace deal for bloody war in Ukraine is being negotiated is often a puzzle, but it makes more sense if one understands the underlying premises of today’s raging liberals—and is aware of the bubble of misinformation in which they live and breathe.
First off, one has to understand that the Russian collusion hoax, which was funded by Hillary Clinton’s 2016 Presidential campaign and has been thoroughly debunked, is still the Revealed Word to a shocking number of Democrats who are convinced Donald Trump’s electoral triumphs have been engineered in Moscow. This belief perhaps provides some strange comfort when confronted with the sheer unpopularity of so many liberal policy ideas, but the real danger here is that this conspiracy theory mindset justifies destroying President Trump by any means necessary.
Trump Derangement Syndrome is at least in part driven by the fervent belief that he is (and will continue to be) a Kremlin stooge who must be eliminated, whether by ballot or bullet, so the extremism and implacability of so many Democrats is born of their evangelical belief they are saving America from the long, dark night of totalitarianism. Seen in this light, the Left’s embrace of censorship, social media mob rule, and outrageous antics of every stripe makes a crazy sort of sense.
It is, of course, easy to live in a parallel universe where every criminal is a victim of oppression, every sadly gender-confused person is a saint, and everyone who has not been to college is a moron if you live on a steady diet of MSNBC smugness, BlueSky shrieking, and CNN alarmism. Information bubbles are, needless to say, not a problem only on the political and cultural Left, but the vehemence and vindictiveness that seems to spring forth from an immersion in the roiling Woke ocean of perpetual outrage is more than a little worrisome.
Those who routinely resort to dehumanizing their opponents (Fascists! Oligarchs! Nazis!) so they can continue to believe their acts of violence are a sort of heroic Resistance freedom fighting that should be celebrated rather than condemned are a frightening outcome of our biased higher educational systems, which have now spent several generations ignoring the need for free and respectful debate—and instead focused on overt extremist indoctrination.
Unsurprisingly, given that evidence-based discussions and critical thinking are now considered tools of systemic bigotry by many well-educated liberal idiots, any outlandish and insulting belief is now instantly validated—and passed on—by the lunatics of the Left. Even the most cursory examination of the social media screeds in the run-up to last year’s elections reveals ongoing predictions of concentration camps, death squads, and the military takeover of the federal government if Donald Trump was again elected.
Amazingly, the actual fact that none of this has occurred has not in any way diminished the white-hot fervor of leading Democrats, who daily assure their shrinking number of followers that the end of democracy is nigh because toddlers can no longer get loans from the Small Business Administration. The latest conspiracy theory, that Donald Trump’s resounding victory last year was actually the result of some mysterious hi-tech electoral fraud committed by Elon Musk, speaks to an enduring refusal to accept the historic unpopularity now facing both the Democratic Party and their loudly proclaimed desire to ditch any annoying facet of our Constitutional Republic that does not conform to their wish to save America—by burning it to the ground.
I have a hot tip for the fanatics who have decided that setting Tesla cars ablaze is preferable to debate: The carbon footprint of a lithium battery fire is incompatible with your professed climate goals. Likewise, mocking and insulting or using obvious lies and foolish exaggerations in lieu of reasoned argument are all also unlikely to convince any but the most misinformed and maniacal segments of your howling supporters.
A renewed commitment to peaceful and informed conversation rather than continuing to set our national norms (and a good many expensive cars) alight would be very, very nice and welcomed by all.
