Democrats, who started hopping around like puppies and demanding President Trump’s impeachment the instant he bombed Iranian nuclear sites this past week, seem to have learned little about making difficult adult decisions—a problem that has left them in the political wilderness.
The final impeachment vote, a humiliating exercise that failed by a lopsided 344-79 tally in the House due to many grudging Democrat defections, has provided proof (as if more was needed) that their Party, still shocked by the political return of the amazingly indestructible Donald Trump, are swinging wildly in the hope they can somehow land the magical punch that will raise them from the ashes.
To use a metaphor that seems apt for a Party that has built its brand by imagining we are a nation of unrepentant bigots while devoting the past 20 years to robbing America blind to promote a incredibly expensive Green energy scam, Democrats are intent on tilting at windmills, having convinced themselves that their bizarre fantasies—unrestricted illegal immigration, defunding the police, teaching children to be transgender, punishing those who work hard, rewarding the indolent, forcing us to eat bugs instead of meat, manipulating us into fearing one another, and turning our educational systems into a ponderously bureaucratic and censorious adventure in abject ignorance—will eventually win over American voters who are increasingly and openly disgusted by their ideas and sick of their shenanigans. If the definition of insanity is repeating the same futile strategy and expecting a different result, Democrats today are on the fast track to the looney bin.
This is not to say that Democrats, despite their rough patch in the 2024 elections, still don’t have a loyal following, particularly in our urban areas. Although once-great American cities such as San Francisco, Chicago, Baltimore, and Philadelphia are continuing their slide into decline, debt, and dysfunction due to Democrat policies that seem wholly disconnected from any basic notions of common sense and decency, their voters seem oddly content with continuing to blame America as a whole, which is packed with the type of kind and industrious Americans whom they apparently disdain, for the calamitous conditions that are impacting their communities, families, and children. Selling the shopworn idea that their dirty and dangerous cities are only one more tax increase (on someone else) away from utopia, Democrats in many failing urban hellholes have maintained an death grip on power by blaming Donald Trump for all that ails their citizens—and hordes of illegal immigrants.
The continued popularity of stupendously incompetent Democratic leaders such as Gavin Newsom, Karen Bass, Brandon Johnson, Kathy Hochul, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders, and a great many others is a mystery only if you fail to understand what they are selling: the freedom of childlike irresponsibility.
Remember those summers when you were a teenager, mommy and daddy were still taking care of all your basic needs, and you could sleep until noon before hooting away the day with a pack of your friends? This is what Democrats are selling, the illusion of leisure without accountability. Free housing. Free food. Free medical care. Free internet. Free! Free! Free!
And no judgments. This one is particularly important because, as every fifteen year-old wannabe trapped in an angry and frustrated adult body today knows, moral beliefs and ironclad principles are both a real drag when you want to party.
This la-la land love of no-consequence fun and free stuff, combined with an implacable ideological hatred of those who stubbornly insist on personal responsibility and hard work, is the only semi-rational explanation for the ascendancy of Zohran Mamdani, an avowed Socialist, to the Democrat nomination to be the next Mayor of New York City.
Campaigning on a platform that includes free childcare, free bus rides, city-owned grocery stores, a freeze on rents, and no police, Mr. Mamdani aspires to spend money the government does not have—but he plans to extract from the rich, who will surely flee the City should he be elected. As much as one might want to sympathize with the distress and despair of New Yorkers struggling to survive in a dying city, his plans seem a prescription for hammering the coffin lid on the corpse of a metropolis that has been brought to its knees by decades of governmental, cultural, and personal irresponsibility masquerading as enlightened and compassionate thought. Although iconic and monumental structures such as the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building, Grand Central Station, and many others, all brought to New York City by the hated Capitalism that thrived decades ago, still stand, a downward spiral into a Socialist nightmare (likely followed by a municipal bankruptcy) seems on the agenda for The Big Apple unless the current Mayor, running as an Independent, can somehow prevail in the general election.
Speaking as an ex-New Yorker, I hope that sound government can help restore the City to some semblance of its former glory, but I suspect that the adolescent irresponsibility of its leaders—and the voters who insist on putting them in office—will put New York front and center on the list of Democrat-run cities committing suicide to satisfy the whims of the immature, the reckless, and the lazy, who will employ an ideology and economic system that has failed everywhere it has been tried to punish those hopeful souls who are still clinging to the memory of what once was.
