Kamala Harris has spent the past month reading platitudes off a teleprompter (while still, of course, avoiding any tough questions from an increasingly antsy news media), but we are finally learning a bit more about the policies she plans to pursue should she win in November.
Although it is true that political promises often evaporate like the morning dew, it would be foolish not to be concerned about some of the cockeyed ideas now tumbling forth from Harris and her handlers because our fragile finances have already been battered by three and a half years of Bidenomics, which has produced record inflation, soaring government and personal debt, and ghost towns of empty storefronts all across our nation.
First on the list of what can only be characterized as incredibly stupid ideas is Harris’ pledge to fight “price gouging” by implementing price controls on groceries. As attractive as the idea of more onerous government decrees is to the Sanders-Warren-AOC dictatorial wing of their party, the reality of food price inflation is that the drivers are three-fold: an insane and ongoing Democratic war on fossil fuels that is driving up the costs of production and transport for both producers and retailers, burdensome regulations that result in purposeless pass-along costs to shoppers, and punitive policies that have accelerated the demise of family farms, putting us in a position where the total farmland acres now in production in America has dropped to the lowest level since 1850.
You can’t eat what you’re not growing or raising to slaughter. Climate cultists in the Biden administration, who view farming and ranching as an assault upon Mother Earth (and apparently have not thought through the problems inherent in throttling our food production), now believe we will be far better off with Soviet-style food shortages and the inequities—and hunger—these price controls will inevitably produce.
I am likely not the only person uninterested in having federal price control bureaucrats patrolling farmer’s markets and fining sellers for charging ten cents beyond the government-approved price for a head of broccoli. All this expansion of already far-too-expensive government mandates will accomplish is to produce a thriving black market for those who can afford to pay for quality meats, vegetable, and fruits—while the majority of Americans are left to scour the supermarket shelves for a wilted head of lettuce that meets the Harris-approved price point.
Price controls make sense to no one except tenured Marxists in academia who have never had to run a business or make a payroll, but these are the well-educated Ivy League idiots that Democrats typically look to for their next big idea to impoverish our nation and people. Their seminar room seances with the long departed spirits of Vladimir Lenin and Chairman Mao always have been—and always will be—abysmal failures when it comes to improving the lives of hardworking Americans and their families because Marxism is itself a fatally-flawed political and economic philosophy that has accomplished little other than lead to the deaths of hundreds upon hundreds of millions of innocent and enslaved people.
In any case, if the federal government cannot even control their own spending, you have to wonder how they expect to be able to control prices. Whether we are inaugurating President Harris or President Trump come January of 2025, the first order of business for either will be reining in ruinous spending that is has recently been adding a trillion dollars to our out-of-control federal debt every 100 days. The party is over, comrades (pun intended), and it is time to pay the check, so expect a lot of newly-unemployed federal bureaucrats to be protesting the cruelty of arithmetic in the tough years ahead.
Kamala Harris is also proposing a $25,000 subsidy for first-time homebuyers, which will be, in reality, a $25,000 subsidy for home sellers who will quickly raise their prices. This latest honeypot of misdirected money will drive more housing price inflation and provide an excuse for more maladaptive social (or is it socialist?) engineering designed to promote a Progressive political agenda that most Americans find repugnant. California is, for example, already working to ensure illegal immigrants will have full-access to their loan program for first-time home buyers, and it is certain that all manner of identity politics chicanery would follow right along with yet another foolish federal giveaway financed with more borrowed dollars and more taxes that produce nothing but more overpaid and unnecessary jobs for Washington’s officious and insufferable ruling class of consultants, commentators, and closet communists.
Soon voters will wise up to the gigantic mainstream media propaganda campaign that has magically transformed to most unpopular Vice-President in American history into the Goddess of Democracy. I am old enough to remember when we were all told to practice saying “President Dukakis” because his election was an inescapable fact, so my faith in the wisdom of the American people is still intact—but a bit tattered. Although the tools of distraction and misinformation are now far more powerful than than they were those many decades ago and we cannot but worry about the sort of electoral subterfuge we witnessed in November of 2020, truth has an astonishing way of winning out over marketing.
This week’s Democratic Convention will likely be filled with soaring rhetoric and few specifics, which is to be expected when you are trying to promise everything to everyone—with a minimum of messy reality. I suspect that the Big Lies that will be told in the months ahead will grow bigger, the shrieking rhetoric will become still more shrill, and the electoral dirty tricks emanate a more pungent and foul odor.
However, I am willing the bet that this Presidential campaign and a great many contests for seats in the Senate and House are still far from being settled.
