Can Democrats Keep It Together Until November?

Although anyone with eyes to see knew this was going to be the case, it is still astonishing to see just how rapidly Democrats have lined up to support the candidacy of Kamala Harris for President now that Joe Biden has been cast overboard—after being duly “saluted” for his valiant national service. Given that Biden has apparently been a cognitively-impaired sock puppet for most (if not all) of his Presidency, the rapidity with which Vice President Harris has been installed as his replacement seems to imply she has either been in the circle of those who have been making the decisions behind the scenes or has been deemed a useful future figurehead by those running the Progressive Payola for our federal government.

What is especially notable is that this is all being put in place with nary a whimper of dissent. Now that the results of the Democratic primaries have been thrown in a ditch by Joe Biden’s forced withdrawal as a candidate for reelection due to his obvious dementia, it would seem natural and normal to throw open their Convention and allow a range of candidates to make their case. However, this seems the very last option being considered, which seems odd for a Party that constantly claims to be protecting democracy. Perhaps the fear is that too many competing voices will dilute their message going into a tough campaign with former President Trump, but I believe the truth of the matter lies elsewhere.

I suspect the real problem with an open Democratic Convention—for the Democrats, at least—is that it will strip away the illusion of normalcy the Democrats are desperate to maintain. The last thing they need going forward is to provide a nationally televised platform for the illegal immigrant loving, America-hating, free-spending, gender-bending, climate-panicking, pedophile-welcoming, race-baiting, military-disparaging, criminal-coddling, police-protesting base of their Party.

The decision to obediently line up for cackling Kamala is, therefore, one likely born of expediency and a desire for self-preservation. The hope is that the mainstream media will be willing allies in their effort to keep their notably cuckoo base of supporters under wraps until the November elections are done and gone and dusted. The propaganda campaign designed to obscure her disastrous record of non-accomplishment as Vice President must, of course, succeed; if it does not, the Kamala Harris jokes will dominate the conversation about her candidacy.

The big question is will this work, and the answer will depend on three key factors.

First and foremost, her Convention speech and the next Presidential debate are make or break moments in her quest for The White House. It goes without saying that she also needs to avoid stepping on her own tongue during her many public appearances between now and Election Day. If her brittle and empty laugh (or tendency to get defensive when a tough question comes her way) starts to surface as the grind of campaigning proceeds on its pitiless path, she has no reservoir of good will to carry her forward, so the buzzards might start to circle surprisingly quickly, despite today’s efforts to present her as the savior of democracy in America.

In addition, the question of how effectively the Democrats can placate their Leftist base voters—who will go crazy if they detect the least little pivot to more moderate positions on issues such as law enforcement, green energy, abortion, free speech, reparations, and the Israel/Gaza conflict—is going to loom very, very large. The tension between her need to both appeal to Independent voters and keep her Party’s extremists from revolting might be the worst possible problem for someone already known for resorting to word salads when under pressure.

Finally, there is the pressing issue of whether the big Democratic donors will keep shoveling cash into a Kamala Harris campaign if she seems to be gaining no traction with voters. Recent polls show she is far behind Donald Trump with likely voters, and there may be a point (if her numbers don’t improve) when the cash starts to dry up because it will seem like nothing other than shoveling good money after bad. We will surely be treated to a much ballyhooed series of “shock” polls that will show Harris rocketing past Trump, but the reality is the new car smell will be quickly wearing off over the course of what is certain to be a rough and dirty campaign where both Trump and Harris will be breaking out the brass knuckles. Harris dare not falter if she wants skittish mega-donors to keep dropping checks in her campaign’s bank account.

It’s a long way until Election Day, but the dangers now all seem to lie on Kamala Harris’ side of the ledger. Trump is a known quantity (for both good and bad) and the many pitfalls that might derail Kamala’s feel-good circus are too numerous to count. Should the wheels start to pop off, the end for her candidacy might be both fast and ugly—no matter how assiduously the media attempt to cover up her fall.
