Donald Trump has made one ringing campaign promise if he is re-elected to the Presidency—presumably along with enough Congressional Republican support to ensure he can manage it—that is sure to ignite a firestorm of Democratic opposition should he be re-taking the Oath of Office in January of 2025: He is going to arrest and deport the millions upon millions of illegal immigrants who have waltzed over our borders on Joe Biden’s watch.
The optics of the detention and transportation systems necessary to pull this off are going to be awful—picture lines of shackled illegals being marched into buses, trains, and automobiles under armed guard—and prisoner transport on a scale not seen since the Second World War is going to be twisted into a gross violation of human rights by the many champions of open and unpunished criminality on the political and cultural Left in America and abroad. The same folks who want to defund the police and put a social worker on every street corner are going to lose their minds when the border is closed and the border jumpers are rounded up and expelled.
There will be, without a doubt, a mad rush of illegals into so-called sanctuary states and cities run by Democrats, presuming they will be less likely to cooperate with the federal immigration officials who want to deport them. However, it seems likely that the patience of Governors and Mayors, already tested by the many, many busloads of illegal immigrants arriving from the southern border, might result in some hasty revisions to their commitment to providing sanctuary now that the enormous financial bill for years of sanctimonious virtue-signaling is coming due.
Listening to the whining complaints of, for example, the Mayors of New York City and Chicago now that they have to feed, house, and educate a small portion of the roughly 8 million illegal immigrants who have crossed our borders since Joe Biden put out the welcome mat, it is inconceivable they will be pleased to deal with the overflow racing into their cities and communities from Republican-led states. Expect some revisions to the unshakable moral convictions of Blue State Democrats if expediency—and financial and political reality—demands it.
Judge shopping for restraining orders will be the first order of business as soon as the personnel and policy directives are put into place to facilitate deportations should Donald Trump be re-elected. This effort will go hand in hand with a media blitz of unimaginable ferocity designed to change the conversation from one about long-overdue law enforcement to a white-hot fantasy of white supremacy in action, which will neatly ignore the fact that many Black communities are incredibly frustrated with the negative impact of Democratic sanctuary city policies on their neighborhoods, local schools, and families. Expect some fancy and nonsensical wordplay being employed to label the dissenters as “Black White Supremacists” for daring to be angry at their border-adverse Democratic leaders.
Of course, the magic beans for those determined to normalize border jumping will likely be to exert pressure on common carriers to refuse to transport illegal immigrants back to their own countries. Aside from using lawsuits and social media campaigning to harass private companies working under federal contracts, it might also be the case that liability and insurance issues will render this method of transport impracticable. It does not take much imagination to picture, for example, a riot or passenger takeover on an airliner fomented by those determined to remain in America by hook or crook, and the very first instance will likely spook common carriers into abandoning their contracts.
Therefore, it seems certain that the military will need to play a significant role in transport, and it is equally true that the military will need to backstop federal, state, and local law enforcement due to the sheer bulk of the millions of illegal immigrants who will need to be found and detained. This will prompt, without any doubt, strident complaints about potential violations of the Posse Comitatus Act, an 1878 law that limits the power of the federal government to use military personnel to enforce domestic policies within the United States, and one can easily imagine Governors in deep Blue states such as California and New York trying to restrict the use of military bases within their borders to house and transport illegal immigrants. Expect a lot of scowling lawyers, oodles of grandstanding politicians and Woke celebrity stunts, and a stupendous amount of outrage from liberal media outlets such as MSNBC and The Washington Post.
In short, our nation can expect unprecedented chaos and controversy to result from any attempt to clean up the disaster caused by the Biden administration’s outrageously incompetent immigration enforcement, but this is a national problem that we continue to ignore at our own risk. The simple fact of the matter is that any nation that refuses to control of it’s own borders is creating the conditions for escalating crime, political unrest, and financial catastrophe that will impact every one of its citizens, and this basic Constitutional duty of our government been foolishly abandoned by leaders who are terrifyingly heedless of the grim consequences of their own irresponsible behavior.
