Democracy Or Despotism In 2024?

This past week former President Donald Trump, the putative front runner for his party’s nomination this year, was kicked off the Republican primary ballot by Democratic appointees on the State Supreme Court in Colorado, and several other states are considering similar measures.

The sad irony is that these ballot blockers, who claim to be defending American democracy, are actually undermining it by making it impossible for Americans to vote for the candidate of their choice. This flagrant and unprecedented abuse of power is, strangely enough, considered perfectly reasonable by many partisans in our divided nation today.

It now seems obvious that many on the political and cultural Left consider free and fair elections an incredible annoyance because they might grant power to those who would impede the governmental policies they consider both just and inevitable—so the courts must step in and disqualify candidates deemed insufficiently Woke. This “by any means necessary” dogma has been destroying our institutional norms and denigrating the intelligence and values of average Americans for decades. It is now on full and open display for all to see—and this might presage a dangerously tumultuous time for our country in the year ahead.

Those political and cultural firebrands who want to (here borrowing a Vietnam War shibboleth) “destroy the village in order to save it” so they can maintain their increasingly tenuous grip on America and Americans are drunk on the idea that they can magic Donald Trump off the 2024 ballot and save themselves from the ire of voters—who are disgusted with the direction of our nation.

The political winds are blowing at hurricane force against Democrats right now on key voter issues such as out-of-control illegal immigration, out-of-control public education, out-of-control government spending, out-of-control crime, out-of-control disrespect for American values, and out-of-control control of our personal lives and the economy. Multiple polls are indicating that President Biden and his policies are leading Democrats to an Election Day train wreck should he be his party’s nominee, which itself seems to be an open question at present.

Knowing that a second Trump term would take a chainsaw to the administrative and regulatory state that is the seat of their political and financial power, the hard Leftists who now dominate the Democratic Party are desperate to derail his nomination by—yet again—“any means necessary”, which goes far to explain the continuing and extraordinary nature of the prosecutorial snipe hunt now frantically trying to imprison Donald Trump for asking, among other impertinent questions, how Joe Biden somehow managed to win in 2020 with the largest vote total in history while winning an astonishingly tiny percentage of U.S. counties. Upon such inconvenient queries are multiple felony counts conjured, and the much ballyhooed “insurrection” of January 6th, which was a church picnic compared to the summer of George Floyd riots and looting cheered on by prominent Democrats, has provided another path for Leftist activists (and the activist prosecutors they adore) to drag their Party’s most feared opponent through a morass of legal sewage in order to try to chip away at his lead in the polls.

The question of whether Donald Trump will face electoral disqualification will now land squarely in the lap of the U.S. Supreme Court, which has spent the past 3 years dodging any inquiries related to the conduct and integrity of the 2020 Presidential election, and their decision will test our tattered faith in the credibility of our electoral system. Whichever way they choose to rule will be almost immaterial because the damage that has already been done to our faith in the integrity of our judicial branch of government might be irreparable. Reining in ballot blocking state courts, and election officials trying to please their own political masters, so that voters will be allowed to make their own decisions in the 2024 elections is, without any doubt, the best course of action now available. However, the ideological split on the Supreme Court is likely to produce dueling opinions that will only serve to embolden those who are convinced Americans are too stupid to be trusted on Election Day.

The 2024 elections, which are already certain to be both chaotic and contentious, could turn toxic much faster than we might imagine if thoughtless words and actions continue to chip away at the already-strained forbearance of profoundly exhausted and disheartened Americans. Any dog that has been kicked once too often can turn and rip your throat out in an instant, and one cannot help but wonder just how close our nation is to a breaking point.

Making predictions is always a foolish endeavor, but it is safe to say that any significant and unexpected shock to our country and people—an economic crisis, war, or proof of foreign bribes being accepted—could unleash a rage among Americans that would not be readily contained and could have tragic consequences. Any nation can be governed only with the consent of its citizens, and we are already perilously close to that consent being withdrawn here in America, so continuing to play politics with our election system is a very dangerous game indeed.

Am I predicting armed revolt? No, I am not. However, focused and protracted citizen non-cooperation and a national mood that veers toward the openly punitive could be far closer to reality than we might like to think.

There is a lot of dry tinder out there, yet the ballot blockers and Trump haters still persist in lighting matches in order to burn down a nation full of Americans whom they believe are irredeemably evil. In a sane world we could stop this from happening, but those driven by implacable ideological beliefs (aided and abetted by judges, prosecutors, and legislators who care little for their core responsibilities under our Constitution) are apparently determined to commit electoral arson—the dire consequences for our country be damned
