If you look past the made-for-television glamour of politics (The speeches! The spotlights! The sexual hijinks!), the reality of political life is quite a bit different. It is a matter of making many people unhappy, trying to spread around limited dollars, and leading endless meetings while reading a mountain of tedious memos—if you are actually doing your job.
However, if you have no interest in the drudgery of governance but really, really enjoy overpromising and undelivering, posing for the cameras, and strutting your stuff at celebrity galas, a life in politics can be a gas, and Kamala Harris has been the poster child for doing your job badly—but looking good doing it.
When she started her career as a prosecutor in California, she began crafting her image as an amazing leader—by lying. Blithely ignoring the difference between trying a case herself and her office prosecuting a case as she climbed the administrative ladder, she developed a habit of taking credit for the work others were doing by jumping in front of a camera at every opportunity. Empty but appealing flash and dazzle was her calling card and, as it has turned out, ticket to fame.
Later on Harris found an even better way to leverage her photogenic looks to her advantage by beginning a scandalous affair with influential, shady—and married—California politician Willie Brown, who boosted her career by backing her for San Francisco District Attorney and the U.S. Senate, where she proved at both stops to be great at pontificating and attending lavish parties but a total zero at developing and managing programs that improved the lives her constituents. During her tenure in high office both San Francisco in particular—and California in general—continued to sink into a morass that has led in recent years to an unprecedented outflow of people and businesses fleeing to escape suffocating taxes, crime, regulatory gridlock, high costs of living, and a terrible quality of life.
The obvious narcissism and sheer laziness of Harris turned off voters during her attempt at securing the Democratic nomination for the Presidency in 2020, and she was forced to drop out without securing a single delegate. However, because she was a minority woman just when Joe Biden desperately needed one to meet his diversity goals, she was picked as his Vice President, and she hit the jackpot when Biden was elected but turned into someone too senile to run for re-election.
Unfortunately, before she had the opportunity to slither into the Democratic nomination this year (again without winning a single primary delegate), she had to deal with the annoying workload of the Vice-Presidency.
Harris quickly became infamous as VP for her lax work habits and a tendency to berate her staff when bad publicity came her way. When she was appointed the so-called “border czar” by President Biden after border security began to quickly collapse due to their many reversals of effective Trump-era policies, it was difficult to imagine her being willing to roll up her sleeves and put in the countless and thankless hours that would be necessary to craft a strategy for countering the invasion. Perhaps she was chosen because it was well known she was the person least likely to succeed at the job, but her habit of ignoring the task at hand while demanding favorable publicity has led to the inevitable results: a flood of illegal immigrants, fentanyl, and gang members entering our country—and wreaking havoc.
Sadly, she has fit right into a sickening pattern that has been the hallmark of the Biden-Harris administration, the sugar high of announcing lofty goals and a complete disinterest in the drudgery of implementation. Whether we are taking about building military preparedness, improving public schools, enhancing rural broadband service, constructing electric vehicle charging stations, managing the federal budget, strengthening our alliances, lowering the costs of living, or even rolling out a new FAFSA form, the disconnect between rhetoric and results has been so wide as to be laughable.
Never has the aphorism “Don’t Talk the Talk if you can’t Walk the Walk” been so applicable as it has been to the dysfunction that has gripped our government since January 20th of 2021. The anger and entitlement that erupts whenever either Joe Biden or Kamala Harris needs to answer for the wreckage they have made of our nation explains everything one must know about why so many Americans are so desperate for change.
Oh, did you hear that Biden and Harris have somehow managed to bankrupt FEMA, so there might not be enough money available to help the many tens of millions victims of Hurricane Helene? Those poor people. If only they were illegal immigrants or Ukrainians. We had billions and billions and billions of dollars for them!
Honestly, America would be infinitely better off if, come February of next year, Kamala Harris will be available to host a talk show on CNN or MSNBC. Being able to flatter and flirt on some self-congratulatory liberal snoozefest with lackluster ratings and a steady diet of Hollywood know-it-alls and over-the-hill former government officials sounds like somewhere Harris could fully enjoy the benefits of celebrity without the pesky burden of results.
Perhaps she could write a book too. I will look forward to ignoring it at my local bookstore while enjoying the fact she will be far away from holding any power but that of being able to share her opinions with those foolish enough to pay for the privilege—until we are finally and mercifully able to forget she ever existed.
If, however, she should win the Presidency next month, we might well be looking back on the disaster of the past few years as being a golden age by comparison. Let’s hope not.
